Exploring the Night Sky

When your children explore their world, their curiosity is limitless, much like outer space. It is important that we get involved in their exploration and encourage them to try activities in which they use their imaginations and develop their awareness of what surrounds us.

A fun activity that you can do with your children is to look at the stars and discuss what you see in the sky. Together you can be creative and find pictures by connecting the stars.

Another activity is to look for planets.  During different seasons we can see different planets.  For example, you can see Jupiter until the beginning of November.  The planets look like stars but they shine instead of twinkle.  It is fun to guess which lights could be planets!

One of the most exciting activities you can do is to look for shooting stars.  A shooting star is a small piece of metal, rock, and icy debris from a comet.  October 21st is a great day to look for them, because there will be a meteor shower.  A meteor shower occurs when the earth passes through a stream of a comet’s debris.

Outer space is very mysterious and fascinating.  There are scientists who dedicate their lives to investigating stars, the moon, planets, comets, gases, rocks, and all the other mysteries of the universe.  You don’t have to be an astronaut to explore what’s in outer space.  Curiosity and developing ideas is the foundation of astronomy.  And who knows, one day your children may explore the universe from a spaceship!
